JAMMU, June 19: Students of Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) Department of Global Institutes Amritsar (GIA) designed and fabricated a project of a ‘smart’ wheel-chair that would be helpful besides being low cost for a number of differently abled people.
Vice chairman, GIA, Dr Akashdeep Singh, while congratulating the students for this indigenously created achievement said, “This project is envisioned to cater to the Prime Minister’s theme of ‘Make in India’ and ‘Made in India’. The ‘Robotic Smart Wheel Chair’ is aesthetically attractive, efficient and ergonomically designed and will enable handicap and disabled in doing their day to day chores much more easily”.
The Robotic Smart Wheel Chair is designed and developed by a team of eight ECE final year students – Lovedeep Singh (Captain), Navleen Kaur, Prabsharan Kaur, Mehak Tandon, Rupinder Singh, Sharandeep Singh, Radhika Nanda, Prabjot Kaur, under the guidance of Prof Neetu Gupta HoD, ECE Department.
Prof Neetu Gupta explained – “The acumen and design capabilities of students emerged in the development of a complete working prototype model within the resources available at “Robotics and Automation- Center of Excellence” of ECE Department. The wheel chair used a Microcontroller ATMEGA32, DC Gear Motor, Accelerometer, Battery12V-40Ah, Nylon caster Wheels and E-Bike Tyres etc.”
Team leader, Lovedeep Singh revealed-“The total weight of this smart wheel chair is 20 kg. It can carry weight upto 120 kg. Most of the available wheel chairs are in the price range of upto Rs 1 Lac while the approximate cost of GIA made wheel chair is Rs 11000.”
The mobile device can be used for shifting patients, besides physically challenged and accident victims, as the wheel chair’s operation can also be carried by an external operator alongside.
The top speed of the wheelchair is 15 Km/hr with battery fully charged it can run for around 5 km. Once the battery is discharged it can be recharged within 2 hrs.
