SRINAGAR, Dec 22: Police last night arrested a girl on charges of stone pelting in 2010 summer agitation in South Kashmir district of Anantnag.
The girl identified as Zahida Akhtar was injured in 2010 when police fired on a protest in South Kashmir town of Anantnag. She is the first girl arrested on the charges of stone pelting. She was hit by a bullet in 2010 agitation in her home town.
The girl’s brother Adil Ahmad told Excelsior that Police came to their house last night and asked for Zahida. “I accompanied my sister to the Police Station Saddar and she was let off but was asked to report in the Police Station in the morning. Today we reported in the Police Station at 6 a.m. and I was asked that she is under arrest and won’t be let off”, said Adil.
However, the girl was released this evening on bail. Police sources said that she was wanted in the FIR No. 355/2010 registered against 17 people including the girl.
The girl along with other 16 people are facing charges under Section 148 and 149 RPC besides destroying the public property.
Zahida is the first girl who was arrested on charges of stone pelting. Earlier women in Kashmir have been arrested for militancy but not for stone pelting.
