Srinagar, Jan 11: Authorities today shut down a girls’ hostel run in a residential house at uptown Parrypora in Srinagar outskirts after parents lodged a complaint of “harassment” with the district administration. The residential building was turned into an illegal hostel for girls studying in different coaching centers and was running without permission from the concerned authorities.
S A Qadri, Assistant Commissioner Revenue, Srinagar, said they received a complaint of harassment from few parents whose wards were residing in hostel and after a through checking the district administration found that the hostel was running illegally. Qadri said the girls residing in the hostel complained knocking of the windows, doors and roof top of the building throughout night, which they reported before their parents.
“The owner of the building has auctioned it to an unknown person from South Kashmir, who turned it into Girls’ hostel without any registration. We also found the building was not safe for housing girls so we have shut it down,” Qadri said.
The ACR said there were inadequate security arrangements besides lack of proper boarding and lodging facilities.
Qadri also said that small cabins were carved out in large rooms by constructing wooden walls to accommodate more girl students. Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, Farooq Ahmad Shah has also confirmed that the building was illegally converted into a hostel and he has ordered its sealing.
Parents said some two-dozen girls were residing in the building and hostel authorities were providing them boarding and lodging and each girl was supposed to pay Rs 6000 per month towards the owner.
