SRINAGAR, Oct 30: To provide better eye care for patients in the southern region of Kashmir, an Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) laboratory was inaugurated today at the Government Medical College (GMC) in Anantnag.
The inauguration event was attended by Dr. Prof. Anjum Farhana, the Principal of GMC Anantnag, Dr. Aubid H. Malik, the Medical Superintendent of AH-GMC, and (Prof) Dr. Mohd Yusuf Dar, the Head of the Ophthalmology Department.
On the occasion, the Principal emphasized the invaluable addition of new diagnostic and therapeutic tools to the department, highlighting the importance of these advanced technologies in enhancing patient care.
Dr. (Prof) Mohd Yousuf Dar expressed the institution’s commitment to providing advanced healthcare services to the community.
He said, “The inauguration of the OCT lab signifies a leap forward in the institution’s dedication to offering state-of-the-art medical care.”
Dr. Rayees Ahmad, Associate Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology. He explained that OCT is a non-invasive diagnostic technique that provides in vivo cross-sectional images of the retina. He termed the introduction of OCT as a relief not only for local patients but also for those coming from regions like Banihal and Ramban.
“It serves as a crucial diagnostic tool for the identification and monitoring of various sight-threatening conditions such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and vascular occlusive diseases of the eye,” he said.
Dr. Owais H. Dar, Spokesperson for GMC Anantnag, mentioned that previously, patients from South Kashmir had to travel to Srinagar, specifically to SMHS or SKIMS Bemina, for this essential test.
