SRINAGAR, Aug 21: The Department of General and Minimal Access Surgery at Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag has successfully performed its first peritoneal flap with Transversus Abdominis Release (TAR) for the repair of a complex abdominal hernia under epidural anesthesia.
This procedure involves repairing the inner abdominal tissue with muscle release, which was carried out at GMC Anantnag using a type of anesthesia that involves injecting medication into the space around the spinal cord to numb the lower part of the body.
“Repairing large ventral hernias presents a significant challenge, especially when primary fascia closure is not achievable. Such cases often require advanced techniques to expand the abdominal wall and improve surgical outcomes,” GMC said in a handout issued today.
The surgery, which spanned over three hours, was executed with the highest level of meticulous skill by the committed team of doctors, technicians, and support staff.
Doctors explained that in this case, the surgeons used a specialized technique called Peritoneal Flap Hernioplasty to fix the hernia.
This method, they said, uses the hernia sac itself to rebuild the abdominal wall, terming it a variation of a well-known procedure, where the sac helps repair the layers of the abdominal muscles.
The procedure was conducted by a team of surgeons, including Dr. Zahid Mohd Rather, Dr. Malik Suhail, Dr. Bilal Bashir, Dr. Nazir Ahmad Rather, Mohd Aslam and Bilal Ahmad, under the guidance of Prof. (Dr.) Mumtaz Din Wani, Head of the Unit.
The anesthesia team, comprising Dr. Malik Zafar, Dr. Shayesta, Jaffer and Zahid, employed advanced modalities for optimal patient care, particularly given the patient’s multiple comorbidities, including hypertension and COPD.
