Srinagar, May 8: Since 2019, the Associated Hospital of Government Medical College (GMC) in Baramulla has experienced a higher rate of Lower Segment Caesarean Section (LSCS) deliveries compared to normal deliveries, a trend that persisted until last year.
According to data obtained by Excelsior, over the past five years, more than half of the deliveries were conducted via caesarean section, while fewer were normal deliveries. Year-wise, the proportion has consistently remained above 50 per cent, reaching as high as 61 percent in 2020.
Overall, in five years, the hospital reported a total of 28,087 deliveries, of which 11,574 deliveries were normal and 16,513 deliveries were ensured through caesarean section, indicating that nearly 59 percent of deliveries were via caesarean section.
In 2019, a total number of 4164 deliveries were reported at the hospital, of which 2477 were through caesarean section, which is more than half of the total, while 1687 were normal deliveries.
Similarly, while 6148 deliveries were reported at the hospital in the year 2020, only 2379 deliveries were normal, while 3769 deliveries were ensured through caesarean section.
Same trend was also observed in the year 2021, during which 5875 deliveries were reported at the hospital, of which, 3470 deliveries were caesarean sections while only 2405 deliveries were normal.
In 2022, while the hospital recorded 6812 deliveries throughout the year, only 2834 deliveries were normal, while 3978 deliveries were ensured through caesarean section.
Lastly, during the year 2023, out of 5088 deliveries reported at the hospital, 2819 have been recorded as caesarean section while 2269 deliveries were normal.
The analysis of the data available reveals that more caesarean section deliveries have been carried out at the Associated Hospital of GMC Baramulla since 2019 than that of normal deliveries.
In 2019, data reveals, 59 per cent deliveries were ensured through caesarean section, 61 per cent in 2020, 59 per cent in 2021, 58 per cent in 2022 and 55 per cent in the year 2023.
It is to be noted here that the percentage of the caesarean sections carried out at the hospital is higher than the ideal standards as per which only a few patients out of the total must undergo caesarean section.
Earlier, in February this year, Health & Medical Education Department also referred to the overall increase in the caesarean sections across J&K, 41.7% as per the NFHS-5 survey report against the desired rate of below 15 per cent, mandating the use of Partograph to prevent prolonged labour.
