SRINAGAR, Nov 24: Treading the path of providing advanced healthcare services to people in North Kashmir, the Government Medical College (GMC) Baramulla’s Department of ENT has conducted four more cochlear implant surgeries.
The surgeries were carried out under the surgical expertise of Dr. Zafarullah Beigh as the surgeon and the mentorship of Dr. Arvind Kumar Kairo, Additional Professor at AIIMS New Delhi.
“These surgeries marked a significant leap in advanced healthcare at GMC,” officials said.
They emphasized the key role played by Prof. Ruby Reshi, Principal of GMC Baramulla, in making these advanced surgeries a reality at the institution with Dr. Parvez Masoodi, Medical Superintendent of GMC Baramulla, playing a crucial role in coordination and arrangements and Dr. Nazir Ahmad Khan, Head of the Department of ENT, and Dr. Basharat Saleem, Head of the Department of Anesthesia, providing necessary support.
It was reported that three of these surgeries were funded under the ADIP scheme of the Government of India, while one patient’s parents self-funded the world’s most advanced cochlear implant.
“Despite the challenges posed by anatomical deformities in one patient, all surgeries were executed with precision. Intraoperative audiological and radiological tests confirmed the perfect positioning of implants in all four patients,” officials said.
The surgical team included Rafiq Ahmad and Tabasum as assistants, Tahir as the nursing orderly. The Anesthesia department’s contribution came from Dr. Fahmeeda, Dr. Tahleel, Dr. Tahira, Zakir (anesthesia technician), and Abrar (C-arm technician).
