GMC-J all set to make functional indigenous ultra-modern Radiation Therapy machines

JAMMU, Apr 15: Oncology Department of Government Medical College, Jammu (GMC-J) is all ready to make functional ultra-modern Radiation Therapy machines, all under “Make in India”, which is being seen as a great step towards “Aatm-Nirbhar Bharat” in the field of Medicine in our country.
Dr Ashutosh Gupta, Professor and Head of Radiation Oncology Department stated that the two radiation machines have been made by Panacea Company, which is a subsidiary of Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India. He said the machines have been named after eminent nuclear scientist Homi Bhabha who is considered the father of Nuclear Programme in our country.
“The two machines namely the Radiation Simulator and Bhabhatron Tele Cobalt machine have been procured at a cost of Rs 7 crores from the funds received from Government of India for the development of State Cancer Institute,” the HoD Radiation Oncology disclosed.
Dr Ashutosh further informed that Radiation Simulator is already functional while Bhabhatron Tele Cobalt machine will be made functional soon after the radiation dosimetry work is completed and approval obtained from Atomic Energy Regulatory Board. He stated that both radiation machines have been entirely developed and manufactured in India and this has been seen a step forward towards attaining self-sufficiency in the field of Medicine by our country.
“These two radiation machines will tremendously boost the cancer treatment facilities in Jammu region. They will be followed by installation of Linear Accelerator at State Cancer Institute for which purchase order has been placed,” the HoD stated while adding that Dr Shashi Sudan (Principal, GMC Jammu) has been providing all logistic support to the project for early installation of such modern machines to treat cancer patients in GMC Jammu.
