JAMMU, Oct 14: World Hospice and Palliative Care Day (WHPCD) was celebrated today at Government Medical College and Hospital, Jammu as well as Government Hospital, Gandhi Nagar to strengthen palliative care services in Jammu and Kashmir.
The theme of this year’s WHPCD was ‘Compassionate Communities: Together for Palliative Care’. WHPCD is an annual unified day of action to celebrate and support hospice and palliative care around the world.
The Day was celebrated at Government Hospital, Gandhi Nagar by organizing a seminar on the need of Palliative and Hospice Care in patients suffering from terminal diseases. Director Health Services (DHS) Jammu Dr Rajiv Sharma was the chief guest on the occasion along with Dr Harbaksh Singh (CMO Jammu).
The event was organized under the supervision of Dr Parveen Yograj (Medical Superintendent, Government Hospital, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu). During the seminar, attendants of patients suffering from terminal diseases and the patients under palliative care narrated about their journey and the impact in management through Palliative Care at Government Hospital, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu. The seminar was full of emotions and empathy.
Dr Rohit Lahori (Incharge, Pain and Palliative Care, Government Hospital and Nodal Officer, National Programme of Palliative Care) gave a brief presentation regarding the need of palliative care services in terminally diseases.
Meanwhile, to mark the Palliative and Hospice Care Day, a CME was organized at GMC Jammu. The CME was attended by plethora of faculty members, residents and nursing staff.
Principal GMC Jammu Dr Ashutosh Gupta was the chief guest and Pankaj Gupta (MD JKMSCL) was the guest of honour while Dr Anju Jamwal (Professor and Head, Department of Anesthesia, ICU and Pain Medicine) presided over the function.
Dr Anju elaborated the achievements of palliative care team of GMC Jammu while many lectures were delivered on the occasion by eminent faculty members. This academic feast was organized by Professor Rajesh Mahajan (Intervention Pain and Palliative Care Specialist at GMC Jammu).
Other faculty members namely Dr Anita Vig, Dr Madan Katoch, Dr Ashwani Kumar, Dr Anjali Mehta, Dr Renu Wakhloo and Dr Naine participated delivered lectures while Dr Seema Gupta, Dr Ratnakar, Dr Sanjay Bhasin, Dr Vishal Tandon and Dr Nusrat Kareem Bhat were the prominent who chaired various sessions.
