Avoid irrational use of steroids: Principal

JAMMU, May 28: Continuous Medical Education (CME) on ‘Mucormycosis’ (Black Fungus) was organized today in Govt. Medical College Jammu, under the aegis of Medical Education Unit (MEU) for health care workers on Friday.
During the program, Dr. Shashi Sudhan Sharma, Principal GMC Jammu conveyed a feature address. She said when Mucormycosis sets up in human body it spreads quickly through the nose and the eyes to face, brain and so on.
She advised to use steroids rationally and not to utilize them without consulting a doctor as it can result into causing Black Fungus. ”Using of steroids irrationally in COVID treatment is the primary reason for Mucormycosis,” she added. She also informed that a Mucormycosis lab has been set up for a ready diagnosis and management of patients and diagnosis by KOH (Potassium Hydroxide) test can be given as early as 2- 6 hours( Turn around Time)
Dr. Parmod Kalsotra, Professor and Head ENT department gave detailed presentation on surgical management, Dr. Gurmeet Singh, Associate Professor, Medicine during his discourse talked about Medicinal Management of Mucormycosis. He discussed about risk factors, clinical spectrum, and treatment principles of Mucormycosis.Dr. Mehreen from Microbiology Department talked about Diagnostic Management and cautioning indications of Mucormycosis. She also discussed about the do’s and don’ts to Control Mucormycosis.Dr Vijay Kundal, HoD Medicine and Dr Rajeev Gupta, HoD PSM deliberated on the topic.The CME was attended by the faculty and the Nursing staff and many members on virtual mode.
Dr. Vijay Kundal, HOD Medicine talked about the high mortality rate in Mucormycosis. He said that this disease should be treated aggressively from the beginning with multi-disciplinary approach.
The program was attended by HoD’s, faculty members and medicos from various departments of GMC Jammu in online and offline medium.
