JAMMU, Oct 12: As a major achievement, additional 15 MBBS seats under Economically Weaker Section (EWS) quota have been allotted to Government Medical College (GMC) Rajouri by the National Medical Commission (NMC).
“The allotment of 15 MBBS seats each in Government Medical College Anantnag, Baramulla, Kathua and Rajouri are in process and once these seats were allotted by NMC, the intake capacity shall increase from 400 seats to 460 seats in new Medical Colleges,” a spokesperson of Health and Medical Education Department said.
He said that the NMC has directed all the new Medical Colleges to put in place additional faculty for the increased MBBS seats, as per Minimum Standard Requirement for the Medical Regulation, 1999 of the Medical Council of India read with Section 61(2) of the National Medical Commission Act 2019, before the college comes up for recognition.
The spokesperson further informed that the Government Medical College Doda is likely to get Letter of Permission (LoP) to start the admissions for MBBS students with intake capacity of 100 for the current academic session 2020-21.
“If all goes as per the schedule, the number of MBBS seats in Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir is likely to increase from present 985 to 1145, which will be a major achievement for Health & Medical Education Department and a big relief for the candidates aspiring to become doctors,” he added.
