GMCs facing shortage of 231 faculty members

JAMMU, Mar 20: Government today informed the Legislative Assembly that Government Medical Colleges of Jammu and Srinagar have been reeling under the shortage of 231 faculty members.
In reply to the question of MLA from Domana, Bharat Bhushan, the Minister Incharge Medical Education said that 87 posts of faculty members have been lying vacant in Government Medical College, Jammu and 144 in the Government Medical College, Srinagar.
In GMC, Jammu, out of sanctioned strength of 288 Professors, Associate Professors, Assistant Professors and Lecturers, 201 are in place and 87 posts are lying vacant. Similarly, against sanctioned strength of 399 in the Government Medical College, Srinagar, 255 are in place and 144 posts are lying vacant.
“In order to fill these vacant posts, the direct recruitment posts have been referred to J&K Public Service Commission for making selection against these posts and the posts falling under promotion quota are being filled up by making promotions from eligible feeding cadre members”, the Minister said, adding “in addition to this, these vacancies are also being filled up on temporary basis on academic arrangement in terms of the provisions of SRO 384 of 2009”.
In response to another question, the Minister informed the House that an amount of Rs 32.54 lakh has been placed at the disposal of Government Medical College Jammu under Control of Blindness for procurement of machines as central share. However, the process for purchase of machinery could not be initiated for want of rate contract for the machine.
The process of purchase of machinery was tendered twice and each time only one tender was received and the equipment could not be purchased for want of approval by the purchase committee, the Minister said.
