JAMMU, Sept 17: Mohini, the only elephant of Jammu with which people had religious faith, will no longer be seen here because the Forest Department has declared it unwell and unsafe and has sent him back to Gujrat citing Supreme Court order in which elephants are no longer allowed to roam on roads.
This was stated by Raj Kumar, president Go Raksha Samiti while addressing a press conference here today.
Expressing resentment against the move of the Forest Department, Raj Kumar claimed that Mohini was physically fit and was not posing any threat to anyone. He also said that a dwelling place for the elephant was also made in which it was residing without posing any threat to anyone.
Kumar said that the people who had come to take the elephant had said that they had never seen such a wonderful elephant.
“They had earlier taken the elephant in 2000 and it was brought back to Jammu in 2003 and since then it is being looked after properly and its checkup was also done every year,” he maintained adding: “The DFO concerned had made a wrong report regarding Mohini due to which the elephant was to be sent back.”
“But we will go to the Supreme Court regarding this and will bring the elephant back at any cost,” Kumar continued.
Mahant Rajesh Bittu, chairman Religious Tourism and Heritage Cultural Trust extended support to Raj Kumar and expressed anger over the sending back of the elephant.
“It was a matter of faith which should be respected,” he said and appealed everyone to support Raj Kumar to bring back the elephant.
