JAMMU, Apr 2: Sixty four University Gold Medals for the year 2014 and 55 PhD Degrees were awarded as 16th Convocation of Jammu University was held here today at General Zorawar Singh Auditorium.
Governor, N N Vohra, who is also Chancellor of the University, conferred the Medals and Degrees in the presence of Vice-President of India, M Hamid Ansari, Chief Justice of India, Justice T S Thakur, JU Vice-Chancellor Prof R D Sharma and others.
Besides the University Gold Medals and PhD Degrees, cash awards and medals created out of endowments, were also conferred on the occasion, which was graced by top academicians, bureaucrats, Police officers and judiciary people.
The Gold Medals and the Ph D degrees were awarded in the Faculty of Sciences, Life Sciences, Arts, Business Studies, Social Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, Education and Law.

Besides, cash awards and medals created, out of endowments, for the year 2014, were also awarded.
Navneet Kaur Rissam (MBBS) got total four medals, including University Gold Medal while Shahida Nawaz (Urdu) got two medals and one cash prize. Imtayaz Ali and Soubhika Sharma got Mrs Ishwinder Mahajan Memorial MBA Topper Gold Medal in the Male and Female, respectively, categories.
Anshita Gupta, Alisha Kour and Devika Rakesh were awarded Nikhil Baru Memorial Gold Medals in different categories while Radhika Gupta also got Verinder Goel Memorial Gold Medal. Amit Kumar (LLB) got two medals and one cash prize while
Preeti Jamwal and Varun Kumar were also awarded in different categories.
Earlier, JU vice-Chancellor, Prof R D Sharma, presented the University report and shared the academic and research output of the university along academics and student progression, admissions and examinations, research projects, academic and cultural events, fellowships and awards and infrastructural development besides the initiatives in extension and quality sustenance.
He informed that 58 research projects with a funding to the tune of Rs 35 crores are currently in progress in University of Jammu. He also disclosed about the establishment of Rural Technology Action Group Chapter (RuTAG) in the University for making technological interventions to address the problems of rural masses of J&K State.
The Registrar, University of Jammu conducted the proceedings and announced the awards.
The Convocation was declared open and then closed by the Registrar, Prof Keshav Sharma after obtaining formal consent of the Chancellor for the same.
