Good preparation is best deterrent for regional peace, says Defence Minister

 

NEW DELHI: Stating that the security paradigm ought to be understood by the kind of neighbourhood one country is in, the Defence Minister Arun Jaitley today said good preparation is possibly the best of deterrents for ensuring an atmosphere of peace in the entire region.

   “Our preparation is the best deterrent and that will guarantee peace in the region,” Mr Jaitley said  speaking at a function here organised in connection with giving away of Raksha Mantri Awards.

    “No country can win wars and battles only on the strength of imported equipment from outside. Therefore, there is a need for unleashing the full potentials by to make own equipment,” he said.

    In a boost to ‘Make in India’ programme and to ensure indigenous production, the Government last week decided to give big push for making of fighter aircraft, helicopters, submarines, armoured fighting vehicles and main battle tanks.

    On May 24, in fact Defence Minister Arun Jaitley briefed the cabinet on these and the cabinet took note of the Defence ministry’s proposals.

     Under the “Strategic Partnership” model, the Government has decided to shortlist and then pick Indian companies to collaborate with foreign firms to supply fighter jets, helicopters, and such equipment.

    “For each platform, one private sector strategic partner will be chosen,” the Defence Minister has said. (AGENCIES)
