JAMMU, Nov 14:
Governor N N Vohra today awarded 265 PhD degrees and 367 gold medals at a special convocation held for the former students of Jammu University.
The special convocation was held to enable the former students of the University, who passed out in the academic sessions from 2007 to 2012, to receive their degrees and prizes that could not be given to them during the 14th convocation of the University held on September 1.
“A decision had been taken in consultation with the Pro-Chancellor that henceforth all the state universities shall organize convocations on an annual basis,” said Vohra who is also the Chancellor Jammu University.
The Governor congratulated all the students who received PhD degrees, medals and scholarships at the convocation.
He stressed on the importance of collaborative linkages being developed among the universities and other research and academic institutions in the state to secure optimum utilisation of the available resources.
He said that such an approach was necessary for ensuring that the students, who pass out after successfully concluding their courses, possess varied skills that are required in job market.
“Such linkages are also necessary to make the entire scheme of the choice based credit system truly workable and productive,” he said.
Vohra said it was not enough to merely think in terms of securing well paid jobs.
“Our qualified youth must contribute towards the determination of practical solutions to the various problems and challenges which are facing our country and the state, particularly those which relate to shelter, health, safe drinking water, literacy, energy and in various other areas which are standing in the way of our country moving rapidly forward” he said.
Vohra said obtaining global environment is knowledge driven and highly competitive.
“To achieve success and advancement in their careers, our students need to possess both knowledge and the relevant skills to be able to effectively face and survive in the highly competitive environment in which they have to function.
It is also necessary that the skills, once acquired are constantly upgraded to remain abreast of the latest available knowledge and technologies,” he said.
Vohra said the real challenge before the University is to ensure that every course is attractive to the students and is of interest to the world of business and industry. (AGENCIES)
