Governor for introducing courses with inherent high employability advantage

JAMMU, Apr 12 : Governor, N. N. Vohra, today stressed on Prof. M. P. S. Ishar, Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu, and Prof Talat Ahmad, Vice Chancellor, University of Kashmir, to devote sustained attention for ensuring that the main Campus as well as the off-site Campuses of their Universities develop as centres of excellence.
This would, interalia, require providing a sound faculty, adequate infrastructure and all other necessary facilities to impart education of the highest standard in sync with requirements of the existing and emerging job markets within the country and abroad.
The Governor, who is the Chancellor of the Jammu University, was chairing the 74th meeting of the University Council, at Raj Bhavan here today.
The Governor urged the Vice Chancellors to urgently explore the possibility of the main Campuses and the off-site Campuses of the Universities in the State being suitably linked to optimally utilize the medium of video conferencing and other technological tools so that the students could benefit from the lectures delivered by the experts in various institutions all over the country.
The Governor also urged the Vice Chancellors to critically examine the employability potential while considering the introduction of any new course and the selected courses should provide inherent advantage of greater job opportunities for the students. He added that the employment potential of the selected courses, in the catchment area of the offsite Campuses must also invariably be kept in view.
Referring to complaints about the long delays in the declaration of results of various examinations, the Governor urged the Vice Chancellor to take all required steps to ensure that the results of all examinations were declared within stipulated time frames.
Regarding the functioning of the affiliated colleges of the University, the Governor stressed the crucial importance of ensuring that all such institutions follow the prescribed norms to impart quality education, adding that for achieving this objective a comprehensive mechanism should be put in place for these institutions being monitored on a regular basis.
While reviewing the to-date status of the creation of infrastructure in the main Campus and off-site Campuses of the University, the Governor stressed that all new and under-construction buildings must have provision for utilizing solar energy and rain water harvesting.
Mohammad Akbar Lone, Minister for Higher Education, stressed the need for enhancing the employability potential of the students and called for undertaking detailed analysis while introducing new courses so that these are in consonance with the emerging job market scenario.
Earlier, Prof. M. P. S. Ishar, Vice Chancellor, Jammu University, in his power point presentation, gave details of the academic and extra-curricular achievements of the University. He also dwelt on the efforts being made to improve the existing infrastructure and the initiatives taken in the fields of teaching, research and extension activities.
The meeting among others was attended by Prof. Talat Ahmad, Vice Chancellor, University of Kashmir; B. R. Sharma, Principal Secretary, Planning and Development; K. B. Aggarwal, Principal Secretary, Higher Education; B. B. Vyas, Principal Secretary, Finance; Navin K. Choudhary, Principal Secretary to the Governor; Prof. R. P. Tandon and Prof. Naresh Padha, Registrar, University of Jammu.
