SRINAGAR, June 1 : N. N. Vohra, Governor, today called upon valuable members of the medical fraternity to secure maximum benefit from the rapidly advancing frontiers of scientific knowledge and technology for achieving cost effective management of various ailments.
The Governor was inaugurating the 32nd North Zone Annual Conference of the Indian Orthopaedic Association organized by the Department of Orthopaedics, SKIMS Medical College, Bemina, at SKICC, here this evening.
The Governor stressed the need for progressively enlarging specialized medicare centres within the State for enabling timely and effective management of various diseases, particularly orthopaedic problems so that people do not have to travel long distances for receiving the required treatment.
He hoped that all the required medical care and surgical interventions would become available within the State in the next few years and no one will have to undergo the cost and inconvenience of traveling to receive treatment in hospitals outside the State.
The Governor released a souvenir brought out on this occasion and joined Dr. Mehraj-ud-Din, Guest of Honour, to give away Honorary Fellowships to three doctors.
Earlier, the Governor lit the ceremonial lamp to mark the commencement of the conference.
Dr. Mehraj-ud-Din, Member Governing Body of SKIMS and its former Director, threw light on the establishment and growth of SKIMS Medical College.
Prof. Showkat Ali Zargar, Director, SKIMS, said that the conference, in which eminent orthopaedic surgeons are participating, will provide a great opportunity to the young orthopaedic surgeons to share experiences and knowledge.
Prof. Khurshid Iqbal, Dean Medical Faculty, SKIMS, threw light on the new technologies which have been evolved for the management of orthopaedic disorders.
Dr. S. K. S Marya, President, Indian Orthopaedic Association, dwelt on the establishment, evolution and growth of the Association and the activities being undertaken by this organization.
Dr. Mukand Lal Sharma, President of the North Zone Indian Orthopaedic Association, gave details of the activities of the North Zone Association.
Meanwhile, Mr Vohra emphasized the need for making the UNESCO Madanjit Singh Institute of Kashmir Studies (UMIKS) a vibrant centre of excellence for undertaking quality teaching and research on social, cultural, historical, governance and other aspects, in the historical, contemporary and future context, to secure the unique objectives of this Institute.
The Governor, who is the Chancellor of the Kashmir University and Chairman of the Governing Body of this Institute, was chairing the Governing Body meeting of the UNESCO Madanjit Singh Institute of Kashmir Studies at Raj Bhavan here today.
While discussing various issues relating to the functioning of the Institute, the Governor emphasized the value of approaching eminent academics, who are known experts in identified fields, to deliver lectures at the UMIKS for the benefit of the scholars and students pursuing their studies and research projects at the Institute. He also emphasised the importance of ensuring that the outcomes of the studies and researches are of current and future relevance to countries of South Asia.
