Jammu, Apr 22: Governor N N Vohra inaugurated the Wadia Chamber at Wadia Museum in GGM Science College, Jammu.
This Chamber is dedicated to the memory of Dr. Darashaw Nosherwan Wadia, Father of Indian Geology, who had founded the Department of Geology in this College. The Governor showed keen interest in the books and research related materials, instruments and other artifacts belonging to Dr. Wadia.
The Governor went round the Wadia Museum which has a large and rare collection of fossils, minerals and rocks in whole of North India. It also has a large collection of early geological maps, topographical maps, equipments, models, photographic materials, meteorites, zoological specimens and Neolithic stone implements. This Museum also houses the Wadia Archive, containing a large collection of books and journals of early 20th century.
The Governor also visited the Heritage Gallery, located in another wing of the College, and went through old photographs and albums which contain very rare pictures of Jammu town as it was more than 100 years ago. This gallery also contains vintage scientific equipments and instruments, some of which are still in working order.
The Governor asked Sheikh Mushtaq Ahmad, Secretary Higher Education and Prof. Nutan Reusotra, Principal, G.G.M Science College, to initiate immediate steps for the restoration of all the precious manuscripts and photographs and their proper preservation. He suggested that help could be sought from experts for preservation and digitization of books and monograms, particularly those related to the researches done by Dr. Wadia. He also urged proper preservation of the pictures and other materials kept in the Gallery.
Rakesh Kumar Gupta, Principal Secretary to the Governor was present on the occasion.
