JAMMU, Feb 4: Governor N.N. Vohra released “Plant Medicines of Jammu Region”, a book written by Dr. K.C. Sharma, Chief Consultant Surgeon, at the Raj Bhavan here today.
This volume is the outcome of long years of the author’s research in medicinal plants which are found in different areas of J&K. Dr. Sharma has catalogued the plants, along with their vernacular names, and the uses to which they can be put.
Governor observed that this book should be of great use for research institutions in the State and suggested to the author to inform the two State Farm Universities, Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine-(Jammu) and other institutions which are carrying out research in the qualities and uses of herbal plants for manufacture of medicines.
He noted that the Farm Universities could start pilot projects on growing certain medicinal plants and provide advice to the farmers, through Krishi Vigyan Kendras, to cultivate such plants on commercial basis.
The Governor appreciated Dr. Sharma’s endeavours and hoped that he would continue his interest and valuable contributions towards the application of his knowledge and long years of experience for promoting the interests of the rural population.
Dr. Sharma gifted saplings of two plants of Hariman-99 Summer Zone Apple, which have been grown by him at his personal nursery, to the Raj Bhavan. The Governor planted both these saplings in the Raj Bhavan orchard.
Present on the occasion were P.K Tripathi, Principal Secretary to the Governor, Dr. Oma Sharma, G.N. Naik, former Divisional Commisioner, and Dr. Mukand Lal Sharma, a retired Heart Surgeon.
