Govt to boost vegetable production in hilly areas

UDHAMPUR, Oct 18: To give boost to the vegetable production in hilly belt of Jammu region a two day long training programme on organic vegetable cultivation was held at Panchayat Ghar Sudhmahadev in district Udhampur.
The camp was inaugurated by A K Malhotra, Joint Director, Agriculture Extension, Jammu. A total number of 30 vegetable growers 10 each from Districts of Udhampur, Reasi and Ramban participated in the training programme.
Mr Malhotra asked the farmers to grow vegetables organically as the continuous use of chemicals fertilizers and pesticides has resulted into residual effect in vegetables, fruits and other eatables causing number of diseases to human beings and animals.
With the indiscriminate use of these chemicals the condition of the soil has been deteriorated to a great extent besides the polluting the environment significantly.
He advised farmers to grow vegetable by using organic manure, vermin compost, bio pesticides, bio fertilizers to the soil health for sustainable agriculture.
He said the Department has engaged ACTECH Information System Ltd to facilitate the farmers for growing vegetable organically. A collection Centre for Gauri Kund, Sudhmahadev is under construction for colleting vegetables grown by farmers of the surrendering areas.
