Govt frames panel to examine Model Prisons and Correctional Services Act

JAMMU, Aug 23: Government today accorded sanction to the constitution of a committee to examine the provisions of the “Model Prisons and Correctional Services Act 2023.”
As per an order issued in this context, the committee shall comprise of DGP (Prisons), J&K, as its chairman, and representatives from the PHQ not below the rank of SSP to be nominated by the Special DGP, J&K; CID not below the rank of SSP to be nominated by the Special DGP, CID, J&K; Department of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs not below the rank of Additional Secretary to be nominated by Secretary, Department of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, and Prosecution Department not below the rank of DD(P) to be nominated by the DG, Prosecution, J&K, as it members.
The committee has been tasked with studying the provisions of the Model Prisons and Correctional Services Act, 2023 and suggest changes/modifications wherever necessary along with justifications, while keeping in view the comments received from various quarters on the draft Model Prisons and Correctional Services Act, 2023 and studying the provisions of Model Prisons and Correctional Services Act, 2023 with a view to suggesting the changes as may be necessary in the provisions contained in the Prison Manual, 2022.
The committee to be serviced by the Prisons Department has been asked to submit its draft along with appropriate recommendations to the Home Department within 15 days from the date of issuance of the order.
