JAMMU, Oct 16: Government Hospital Sarwal is going to start specialized sport injuries clinic every Wednesday for the benefit of the sportspersons.
This was informed today by Medical Superintendent of Government Hospital Sarwal, Dr Harbaksh Singh. He shared that Dr Nipun Kalsotra, Consultant Orthopaedics in the hospital, will provide his services in the clinic and give specialized treatment to patients with sport injuries, chronic joint pains and ligament injuries for which they have to spent lot of money in private hospitals and travel outside the Union Territory.
Dr Singh informed that last month two cases of arthroscopic ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) reconstruction surgery of knee joint using hamstring tendon autograft were performed in the hospital on young athletes of age 20 and 22 years to whom chronic ACL tear had occurred while playing sports. He said that they were operated by Dr Nipun Kalsotra and team comprising anesthetics Dr Vishal Gupta, Dr Sindhoor Singh and others.
“The patients were having chronic pain and instability in knee joint due to which they have to stop playing sports and have difficulty in performing day to day routine activities. Patients were allowed to walk the next day and were discharged from the hospital after two days of surgery,” he said. He added that Arthroscopy (button hole) surgeries are specialized joint surgeries done in case of ligament injuries which are very common in sport persons and also in individuals who are physically active. He said these surgeries are routinely done in Sarwal Hospital from past few years by Dr Nipun Kalsotra, Consultant Orthopaedics.
Dr Nipun Kalsotra has done fellowship in sport injuries and arthroscopy surgery from Germany. Dr Kalsotra informed that Sports Medicine is a relatively new subspecialty of Orthopaedics. “Sports are gaining desired recognition all over the world including India. People at large are getting increasingly concerned about their health and fitness and therefore, the Sports Medicine specialty also seems to have dropped the veil of anonymity,” he said, adding, the sport injuries clinic will be first of a kind specialized clinic in the district hospital.
