JAMMU, July 8: In order to keep a check on over-speeding of vehicles and violations of traffic norms for avoiding road mishaps, the State Government is mulling GPS Tracking Unit in the public transport vehicles in Jammu and Kashmir.
The tracking unit will be installed in all kinds of public transport in a phased manner by making it mandatory during registration of the vehicle with State Transport authorities, official sources informed the Excelsior.
For the purpose, sources added, the State Transport Department is in consultation with the Traffic Police and other agencies for establishment of a high-tech Control Room and monitoring of the same by experts.
The installation of GPS Tracking Unit in the public transport will keep these vehicles under the constant vigil of Transport Department and the Traffic Police thus helping the authorities to check violation of traffic rules and over-speeding etc. Thus, it will greatly help in curbing the road mishaps as well as any possibility of a mischief by the taxi operators.
Pertinent to mention that GPS Tracking Unit is a device that uses the Global Positioning System to determine the precise location of a vehicle, person, or other asset to which it is attached and to record the position of the asset at regular intervals. The recorded location data is transmitted to a central location data base or internet-connected computer using a cellular (GPRS or SMS), radio, or satellite modem embedded in the unit. This allows the asset’s location to be displayed against a map backdrop either in real time or when analyzing the track later using GPS tracking software.
Even as GPS Tracking Units are already being installed in some inter-district taxis here, the devise serves little help to the Government agencies owing to no monitoring of the same due to absence of any control room.
Therefore, sources said, establishment of a Control Unit is most essential part of the tracking system for which the Transport Department has initiated process. Besides the Traffic Police, help of a cell phone company, probably BSNL will also be taken for functioning of the Control Room, sources added.
According to the sources, to check effectiveness and utility of the GPS Tracking Unit, the Transport Department is contemplating to introduce Radio Frequency Device (RFD) in the public transport vehicles in the initial stage.
RDF is small chip, with the help of which the vehicle fitted with it can be located easily. However, it can not help in monitoring the vehicle speed, which is possible only with a GPS devise, sources explained.
When contacted, Transport Commissioner Sanjeev Verma confirmed that his department was in consultation with Traffic Police and other agencies for evolving a mechanism to monitor movement of all the public transport vehicles with the help of GPS Tracking Unit or RFD. The constant monitoring of public transport vehicles will greatly help the authorities to check violation of traffic rules and over-speeding thus curbing road accidents in Jammu and Kashmir, he added.
