NEW DELHI, Sept 25:
Government is mulling a probe into the report of an official inquiry that went into the activities of a controversial intelligence unit set up by former Army chief Gen V K Singh over which already a political storm has been raging.
The Government is considering conducting a probe into certain aspects of the Army internal probe report done by a Lt Gen on the Technical Support Division set up during the tenure of Gen V K Singh, sources said here.
In the last three-four days, two high-level meetings have been held where the National Security Adviser, representatives of the Defence Ministry and intelligence agencies were present to discuss the issue, they said.
The proposed inquiry may be conducted by one of the agencies under the Home Ministry, they said. The TSD, which was set up during the tenure of Gen Singh, has been accused of carrying out “unauthorised operations” and “financial wrongdoings”.
Gen Singh denied all the accusations against him. He said the Army pays money to certain Ministers in the State to bring stability there but later backtracked saying they were not bribes and the funds were meant for civic works under the Operation Sadbhavna of the force.
The Army says it has spent Rs 104 crore on Operation Sadbhavna in the last three years.
The unit has also been accused of indulging in activities for destabilising the J&K Government.
The inquiry done by a committee led by Lt Gen V K Bhatia has said that the unit had carried out operations across the border without permissions form the higher-ups.
It has also alleged that financial wrongdoings to the tune of Rs 8 crore have also been found in the functioning of the unit. (PTI)
