Govt must take steps for wool growers’ promotion: Khajuria

RAJOURI, Feb 26: Dr Romesh Khajuria, Chairman Wool & Woollens Export Promotion Council (WWEPC), Ministry of Textiles, Govt of India stated that JK UT Govt must formulate a comprehensive programme for the promotion of wool growers of Jammu and Kashmir.
He was interacting with the wool growers at village Jhandi Dhara, Panchayat Dariya of Doongi block, in Kalakote and block Seri, Nowshera, in district Rajouri today.
Khajuria is on two days tour to Rajouri district to take stock of information from ground level about wool production and its marketing. The wool growers brought to the notice of Dr Khajuria that they are not getting appropriate price of their produce and HADP scheme is failed to provide them MSP (Minimum Support Price) guarantee of their produce, wool growers also told that Wool Mandis are not established at proper place which is difficult to reach out by the sheep rearers and buyers.
He further said that the Wool Mandi facilities must be provided at National Highway which will be easy to transport their produce and reduce the transport cost, also told that insurance schemes for their animals are inappropriate and not covering various heads of their losses happens during the migration period and animals died due to consuming poisonous herbs during grazing in pastures.
Dr Khajuria advised the wool growers to adopt new techniques of wool shearing and packaging. He further said that as UT Government is providing shearing and bailing machines for packaging to wool growers Farmer Producer Organisations (FPO) under HADP Scheme. The wool growers must adopt the new technologies to improve the quality of their wool so that it can compete in the market.
He assured that he will take up their issues with the concerned authorities and especially to provide support to wool growers in wool shearing. Dr Khajuria also assured the wool growers that he will try to convince the woolen manufacturers industry in Ludhiana & Amritsar to buy the greasy wool from J&K.
Raj Kumar Thappa, Addl DC, Rajouri along with Dr P P Sajotra, District Sheep Husbandry officer and Dr Khalid District Animal Husbandry officer called on Khajuria and assured to extend all possible help.
