Govt should not interfere in working of media: PM

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today  said the media should be free from any interference from the Government, but also urged the journalists to observe self-restraint.

Speaking at the National Press day function here, the Prime Minister said external control on the press in any form was bad, as it was the press that upheld the freedom of speech.

In this context, the Prime Minister recalled the days of Emergency, when the freedom of the press had come under severe strain. ”Freedom of expression  should be maintained, but  there must be some limit to such  freedom,” he said.

Mr Modi lauded the positive contribution made by the media to the society, but also underlined that it was the responsibility of the press to function in accordance with the changing times. He  said the media played a vital role in the society and recently contributed excellently in propagating the ‘Swachchata Abhiyan’.

He also condemned the attack on mediapersons that took place in the recent past. ”The mediapersons were attacked just because they wanted to expose some miscreants,” said Mr Modi. He called upon the journalists to be very careful, while dealing with the news events. (AGENCIES)
