Govt providing regular aid to cancer hospitals: Dr Jitendra

NEW DELHI, May 6: The Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Government of India, is providing regular aid to several cancer hospitals across the country, among which, the well known Tata Memorial centre/Hospital in Mumbai is a fully funded Grant-in-Aid institution.
Disclosing this in the Lok Sabha today, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances,Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr Jitendra Singh said, certain hospitals like, for example, Tata Memorial Centre receive aid on regular basis both under Plan as well as Non-Plan heads. In addition, Department of Atomic Energy also provides financial assistance to various other cancer hospitals in the country under a programme called “Financial Assistance for Development Programme of Cancer Institutions in India”, he said.
Dr Jitendra Singh said, the aid provided by the Government is primarily meant for buying equipments and undertaking research projects. A number of cancer research projects in different universities are also supported by Government, particularly those of the projects which have a direct relevance to diagnosis, therapy, instrumentation, innovation and upgradation of these facilities, he added.
Giving details in reply to a question, Dr Jitendra Singh said, in the year 2014-15 alone, a grant of Rs.393.10 crore was released for Tata Memorial Centre and during the last five years beginning 2010, a total amount of Rs.1453.89 crore was provided to this hospital.
Among the other cancer institutes which received the Government aid during the just concluded financial year of 2014-15, Dr Jitendra Singh mentioned the names of Bhubaneswar Borooah Cancer Institute (BBCI), Guwahati, Assam, Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology, Bengaluru, Karnataka, Cancer Department, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh, Saroj Gupta Cancer Centre & Research Institute, Kolkata, Shri Siddhivinayak Ganpati Cancer Hospital, Miraj, Maharashtra, Department of Oncology, Government Rajaji Hospital, Madurai, Tamil Nadu and Punjab Health System Corporation, Mohali, Mohali, Punjab. Some of the other institutes which have received similar aid over the last five years included, Benaras Hindu University, SMS Medical College, Jaipur, Rajasthan, Amravati Cancer Foundation, Amravati, Maharashtra, Indian Institute of Head & Neck Oncology, Indore, Madhya Pradesh, Kamala Nehru Memorial Hospital, Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, Cancer Hospital and Research Institute, Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, Vivekanand Medical Foundation & Research Centre, Latur, Maharashtra, and Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai, Tamil Nadu, he added.
