Greece evacuates 33 its citizens from Syria – Foreign Ministry

DAMASCUS, Dec 31: The Greek government evacuated 33 Greek citizens and their family members from Syria after the armed opposition seized power in the Arab country, the Foreign Ministry said.
“Following the coordinated efforts of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Embassies of Greece in Damascus and Beirut, the repatriation of 33 Greek citizens and their family members from Syria was safely completed today, Monday, December 30,” the ministry said in a statement on Monday.
The ministry noted that it remains fully prepared to provide all possible assistance.
Syria’s armed opposition captured Damascus on December 8. Russian officials said that Syrian President Bashar Assad stepped down after negotiations with participants in the Syrian conflict and left Syria for Russia, where he was granted asylum. Mohammed al-Bashir, who ran an Idlib-based administration formed by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and other opposition groups, was named interim prime minister. He later announced that an interim government had been formed and would remain in place until March 2025.
