Police charge sheets 7 for weapon snatching

SRINAGAR, Jan 18: Militants hurled three grenades at security forces in Srinagar and Shopian today. However, there was no loss of life or injury and a militant was arrested with a grenade in Kupwara.
Militants lobbed a grenade in Lal Chowk near Ganta Ghar damaging a vehicle and windowpanes of some shops.
A vehicle that was parked near the Ganta Ghar suffered damage while as the glasses of some shops were also damaged.
Militants also lobbed a grenade in South Kashmir’s Shopian district today. Police said that no loss of life or property was reported in the incident.
They said that the investigation in both the incidents is going on.
Militants this evening hurled grenade upon Police Station Kakapora which exploded inside its compound. However, no loss of life or injury was reported in this incident. The guards on duty fired few rounds in air and militants fled away.
Police said that it has registered cases for both the incidents. “Officers from the local police units are at work to establish the full circumstances which led to these incidents,” police said.
This is the second grenade attack in Srinagar since yesterday. A Police officer was among three cops injured in the grenade attack on Police at Rajbagh yesterday.
Sources said that two local militants of Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) are in Srinagar, who are responsible for these grenade attacks in the city.
Police today arrested a person and recovered incriminating materials including ammunition from his possession in Kupwara district of North Kashmir.
Police said that they intercepted one Mohammad Aslam Beigh son of Nazir Ahmad Beigh of Lolab, at a check point in Kupwara and upon his personal search, seized one grenade, besides other incriminating materials.
Police said that preliminary investigation suggested that the individual was planning to join militants, and along with other militants was plotting an attack in Kupwara area.
A case (FIR No. 6/2019) in this matter has been registered in Police Station Kupwara.
In the meantime, police today presented charge sheet in weapon snatching conspiracy and murder before the Court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Srinagar.
Charge sheet was presented against seven accused persons including Omar Noor Bhat son of Noor Mohammad Bhat, resident of Chhatabal, Waseem Ahmad Sofi son of Bashir Ahmad Sofi, resident of Chhatabal, Adil Majeed Bhat son of Abdul Majeed Bhat, resident of Chhatabal and Obaid Altaf Zoji son of Mohammad Altaf Zoji, resident of Naribal Soura who are currently lodged in Central Jail Srinagar.
Police said that they were involved in attack at the guard post deployed at the residence of Fazal Haq Qureshi in Soura area of Srinagar on 25th of February last year. In the attack one policeman Farooq Ahmad was killed and his service rifle was snatched.
