It is a matter of concern that hand pumps installed at many places for public utility of getting potable water are found out to be contaminated and unfit for human drinking. The reasons for most of such hand pumps being breeders of water borne diseases are evident. Unplanned construction of houses , faulty drainage and leaking drains, throwing away disposable waste and garbage wherever one chooses, no proper system of these pumps getting cleansed etc are contributory factors. Most of such pumps have become home to various worms and insects. PHE and health departments are seen doing nothing excepting doing formalities in the matter that involves public health especially the poor who cannot afford tap water or have tap connections but supply of water is insufficient. During summer people tend to use such installed pumps as they face acute shortage of water. The authorities are required to act in the public interest immediately.
