JAMMU, Nov 23: Flower Growers of Jammu Division today met under the leadership of Tejinder Singh Wazir, Member J&K Kissan Advisory Board to highlight the pressing needs and requirements of the flower growers across J&K.
Tejinder Singh expressed his gratitude for establishment of a theme based garden Bagh-e-Gul-e-Dawood and Polo view Nursery in Srinagar that would enable the production of the floricultural sustainably and locally for indigenous flower, bulb and plant production from UT by involving local flower growers /nursery men of J&K UT.
Wazir said that from the last one decade the growers have been appealing for local production of flower bulbs and creating a concrete policy for promotion of Commercial Floriculture Industry in the UT. He further added that despite suitable climatic conditions and the potential the UT has for production of Tulip bulbs, billions of rupees are spent on import of Tulips from other countries. “ Growers can easily propagate Gul-e-Dawood and it can fulfil the local demand under the slogan Local for Vocal. He emphasized that the concern Administrative Department should work on such mechanism where local farmers may be involved in this Gul-e-Dawood Garden and such theme based gardens should be created in Jammu province to tap the Flori Tourism potential in Jammu also.
Wazir expressed gratitude towards CSIR Floriculture Mission under Ministry of Science and Technology for rrevitalizing commercial floriculture in the UT and empowering more than 3000 farmer families across UT. He informed that the Mission has creating a sustainable model for year round production of flowers and since last three farmers benefited under the Mission has generated flowers locally worth Rs. 25 Crore.
He along with the other members of the Board and farmers further appealed Dr. Jitendra Singh Minister of Science and Technology for strengthening the initiative taken in Floriculture Mission under his Ministry to tap indigenous propagation of Tulips and Bulbous crops and generate mechanism where bulbs of cut flower crops can be exported to other parts of the country for making theme based gardens. He also emphasized in organizing a “Pushp Kranti Mela” for encouraging the flower growers, florists and other farmers considering the prospects and possibilities of commercial floriculture.
