Daily incidents of heinous crimes are surfacing, and each incident is shocking beyond one’s imagination. It is also a fact that not any one section of society is involved in these gory crimes, but a wide spectrum of deterioration in moral and social values seems to be the root cause. One can understand the daring crimes in metropolises, with the criminals taking advantage of the huge population and porous borders to escape, but in the small cities of Jammu and Kashmir, the same mindset is inconceivable. The recent incident is that of Soibugh Budgam, where the girl was missing for the past few days, and the investigation revealed the gruesome murder committed by a mason. It is not that the murderer is a teenager but a forty-year-old man, and the way the crime has been committed is simply spine-chilling. Cutting the body into pieces, keeping the head in one’s own house, and disposing of the rest of the body part by part is too much to even think about. The police have cracked the case, but the question remains: why is there such a degradation of values in our society? In this digital age where mobile phones and CCTV ensure that no crime can go untraced for long, why do people think otherwise? Only a few days ago, a girl was stabbed at the residence of her friend, and a subsequent attempt to commit suicide followed. This happened in proper Jammu City. In every region, such heinous crimes are being committed. There is an urgent need for counselling, and the Health Department must come out with helpline numbers for proper medical counselling. Proper guidance at the school level must be introduced as a part of the school curriculum. Parents must encourage their children to share their problems. Practically everyone has to be vigilant and contribute to making society crime-free. Fast-track courts must deliver exemplary justice in time and let it be a deterrent for future crimes.
