Gujjars demand setting up of tribal university in Pir Panchal

JAMMU, Apr 3: The Gujjar and Bakerwal community of J&K has demanded setting up of a tribal university in the Pir Panchal belt with special reservation for marginalized groups and people living in remote and backward areas of the State.
The community leaders raised this demand in a programme organized by Tribal Research and Cultural Foundation to discuss the issue of Tribal University.
The event was presided over by renowned writer and researcher, Dr Javaid Rahi, while a number of dignitaries were also present on the occasion.
In his address, Dr Javaid Rahi stated that there is an urgent need to promote studies and research in tribal art, culture, tradition, language, custom, medical systems, etc and added that establishing a tribal university can cater to all these needs.
“We have sent a fresh communique to PM and HRD Minister demanding opening of a tribal university in Pir Panchal belt”, an executive member of foundation said, adding that the establishment of the university will cater to the specific educational needs of the tribal and marginalized population of J&K, Himachal Pradesh and other north western Himalayan States.
He also stated that 12 tribes of J&K are demanding establishment of a Tribal University in the State on the lines of Indira Gandhi National Tribal University in Madhya Pradesh.
