Gujjars meet VC, demand Gojri Research Centre

JAMMU, Dec 28: Gujjar Community delegation led by Dr Javed Rahi, secretary, Tribal Research and Cultural Foundation, today met Vice Chancellor of Jammu University Prof MPS Ishar and demanded establishment of Gojri Research Centre in Varsity.
The delegation submitted a memorandum to the Vice Chancellor in which they mentioned that some forces in the University of Jammu are deliberately delaying the establishment of centre without any reason.
While speaking, Dr Javed Rahi said that centre has been established at Poonch, which is illogical and demanded its establishment in Jammu so that the students of other parts of the State could study this subject.
He said that Gojri is mother tongue of more than 25 per cent of the population of the State and they are fighting since 1980 for establishment of Gojri Department on prototype of Dogri and Kashmir Departments.
Dr Rahi demanded that there is urgent need for promoting studies and research in tribal art, culture, tradition, language, custom and only this research centre can fulfill all these demands and with the help of this centre, the richest tribal traditions of Gujjar could be preserved for all generations to come.
Vice Chancellor assured that concrete efforts would be made to establish Gojri Research Centre in Jammu University.
Registrar of Jammu University informed the delegation that efforts are in full swing for opening of the Gojri Centre.
Among others present were Dr Shah Nawaz, Talib Hussain, president, J&K Gujjar-Bakerwal Student Federation, Mehmood Riaz, writers and activist of Gojri.
