JAMMU, Oct 7: Gujjar community under the banner of Dodhi Gujjar Association today staged a protest demonstration at Gole Market, Gandhi Nagar against the alleged highhandedness of the officials of Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC).
A large number of members of this association which is working for the cause of Dodhi Gujjars covering areas from Lakhanpur to Akhnoor gathered at Gole Market, Gandhi Nagar and raised slogans against the JMC officials.
President of the association, Choudhary Jameel while addressing the protestors said that Gujjars will not supply milk in Jammu’s Municipal limits from Wednesday for indefinite period till their genuine demands were conceded.
Jameel said that since the present Commissioner JMC took over the charge, they are being unnecessarily harassed. He alleged that during the past few days the said officials have destroyed thousands of liters of milk without following any sampling procedure.
He said that many members of their community have been arrested after registering FIRs at the behest of JMC officials who have made false and fabricated complaints. He added that the community never faced such problem during the tenures of present incumbent’s predecessors who followed rules and regulations in full spirit.
Jameel said that the rates fixed for milk sold by them are a cruel joke upon this community. He said that these days when one liter bottle of mineral water costs around Rs 20, they are selling milk at Rs 26 per liter, the cost which is not adequate to meet the high feed costs of their cattle.
He said that the association approached the authorities in the Food and Supplies Department for hiking the rates of milk but there was no positive response from the concerned officials adding that thousands of dodhi gujjars are solely dependent on selling milk.
