SRINAGAR, June 22:   Ahead of Prime Minister’s scheduled visit to Srinagar the Gujjars of the State today appealed Dr Manmohan Singh for  a  comprehensive socio-economic package for tribal community in shape of  resolution of all pending tribal issues with Union Government.
Dr Javaid Rahi, secretary of Tribal Foundation while chairing a meeting of Foundation urged the PM to fulfill the long pending demands of the community including opening  of Tribal University, inclusion of Gojri language into Eighth Schedule of Indian Constitution and conduct of special census of nomadic Gujjars and Bakerwals.
He also demanded for raising of a full-fledged ‘Gujjar Regiment’ in the Army on the pattern of Jat, Raput and Dogra Regiments.
Rahi alleged that lakhs of nomadic Gujjars and Bakerwals  in the State are landless, shelterless, illiterate, and without health facilities and therefore they deserve a “Special Rehabilitation Package”.
