Gunshots fired inside sub-jail

BHIND (MP), Sep 7:  Four unidentified men today fired indiscriminate gunshots on the premises of a sub-jail here leading to an exchange of fire between the gunmen and police, police said.

Tension prevailed among jail inmates and nearby residents following the incident. The accused had come inside the jail premises for meeting prison inmates. The attack came following a confrontation between jail officials and some inmates last night.

Jailer Ramesh Sharma said that he and 15 guards were attacked by a few prison inmates and held captive in a barrack last night when they had gone to inquire whether Ramu Tomar was possessing a cellular phone.

However, jail staff blew the siren and informed the district administration and police administration. They were freed when police arrived.

Later, police found a cellular phone and two SIMs (subscriber identity module) from Ramu Tomar. A case was registered against Ramu Tomar, Ramu Bharauli, Ashok Baghel, Brijesh Baghel, Nityanand and Anar Singh in Kotwali Police Station for disrupting government work on the charge of attacking and holding jail officials captive.
