JAMMU, Nov 19: Indicting the ruling leaders for not holding the civic elections in the State, the former Union Minister and MLA, Prof. Chaman Lal Gupta has impressed upon the Government to come out clearly for not honoring their promises in this regard and make it clear when these polls would take place.
Commenting on the reports that the Central grants for urban developments are being deducted due to absence of elected civic bodies, we said it is a sad situation for which the ruling leaders owe an explanation that why these elections were not held.
He recalled that the elections to the Municipal bodies were due in April 2010. Since then within the Assembly and outside many times it was promised that civic elections would be held “soon” but that has not been honored even after expiry of about four years now.
Prof. Gupta observed that whole approach of the coalition leaders appears to be tricky and making a mockery of the basic democracies.
In this regard, he also pointed out that it was promised by the Congress and some others to empower the basic democracies in the State as per the 73rd and 74th Amendments of the Indian Constitution would be incorporated in the State Laws but so far nothing practical has been done. This exposes the inner of the ruling clan.
