Gupta for strengthening VDCs

Excelsior Correspondent
JAMMU, Aug 14: Former Union Minister and Member Legislative Assembly (MLA) Prof Chaman Lal Gupta strongly advocated the need for strengthening of the Village Defence Committees (VDCs) especially in wake of the sad and painful incidents about attacking the minorities in Kishtwar areas and elsewhere.
He has flayed the demand of some ruling leaders and separatists that Village Defence Committees be dis-banned and the SPOs be removed from the villages in Doda belt.
He alleged that such a demand is loaded with nefarious designs and it must be snubbed by all the right thinking persons and the men in authority.
Prof Gupta said that it was surprising that the ruling men are keeping their silence over the demands of the dubious characters although earlier in the Assembly as also outside the role of the VDCs and those of the SPOs in fighting the menace of terrorism and restoring the confidence of the people in the far flung areas, was acknowledged.
He said that VDCs should also be activised in the border belt of Jammu to extend helping hand to the security forces to frustrate the designs of the enemy for pushing infiltrators to this side.
Prof Gupta assailed the authorities for creating martial law like situation in Jammu city and that too on the eve of Independence Day without bothering the hardships being faced by the people.
