Gupta’s concern over threats to Panchs, Sarpanchs

Excelsior Correspondent
Jammu, June 9: The former Union Minister and MLA, Prof. Chaman Lal Gupta has described it a serious development that Panchs and Sarpanchs are being threatened by the ultras to resign and thus, an atmosphere is being created to generate a sense of insecurity. In a statement issued here today, he said it was intriguing that the certain elements from within and outside the Government are still harping for lowering of the guards by withdrawing of AFSPA and removal of the troops even from militancy infected areas especially the Valley of Kashmir.
Prof. Gupta pointed out that the mentors of cross border terror coupled with their agents never wanted the smooth functioning of the democratic process in this troubled State. It was with great sacrifices and the efforts of the security forces coupled with the cooperation of the nationalist people that a peace like situation was developing in the State. It was an irony of fate that to appease and please the secessionist sentiments the certain ruling leaders have been talking for curtailment of powers of the forces tackling the menace of terror. Even the removal of the troops from such areas is being pleaded although there was no change in the thinking and approach of the mentors of militancy. There is no let up in the infiltration bids and smuggling of the weaponary as also that of subversive material is still going on, he added.
He strongly advocated for firm approach to deal with the anti-national activities as also the elements behind the moves aimed at creating a sense of insecurity amongst the common man especially the elected representatives of the villagers working at the gross root level. Stressing for early steps to nip the evil in the bud, Prof. Gupta said that any dilly-dallying could lead to bigger problems.
