Our State ace gymnasts namely Mitali Dogra, Palak Kaur, Mridul Gupta and Pawandeep Kaur have done honour to the State by beating the best in the country and clinching rhythmic gymnastics team gold in the ongoing 35th National Games, being held at Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala. We convey felicitations to them and wish them more success. The State is proud of them. They have created history by winning the first ever gold in gymnastics.
We have strongly believed that there is no dearth of talent in our State. Our youth is capable of winning laurels on the ground and making history. But what we lack is exposure. In the first place, our rural youth have almost no exposure to physical prowess because there are no training institutes and no infrastructure to develop athletic competence among the youth. Secondly there is scant encouragement from the Government. Only liberal attitude to the vision of India producing top ranking athletes and sportsmen can work wonders. How shameful that a country of 120 million people is unable to win a single gold in the Olympics. We should have been at the top of the list of gold winners but we are at the bottom. Unless there is drastic change in our policy towards development of sports and athletes, we shall not move forward. When we hear about scurvy treatment meted out to our ace athletes and sportsmen in our country, our heads hang in shame.
