POONCH, Jan 14: Prominent Gujjar leader, Shamsher Hakla Poonchi, has urged the Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti to nominate women from Gujjar-Bakerwal community in State Women Commission (SWC) and State Legislative Council (LC).
The Gujjar leader said that on April 19, 1991, the Government of India declared Gujjar-Bakerwal people as scheduled tribe, but even after lapse of over 25 years since grant ST status to the community the State Government could not implement it in letter and spirit thereby depriving the community from availing full benefit of ST status.
Alleging that all the efforts made by Central Government for the development of Gujjar and Bakerwal community of J&K State have been deliberately obstructed by the State Government for past many decades which resulted in their utter political, social, economical and educational backwardness, Hakla said the literacy rate among Gujjar and Bakerwal women is very low and concerted efforts need to be taken in this regard by the Government.
