SRINAGAR, Dec 8: Residents of Baki Aker village in North Kashmir’s Handwara area today demanded urgent action to halt illegal mining in local Nallah.
The villagers allege that miners operate heavy machinery during the night, creating panic and endangering the area’s infrastructure. “The damaged bridge near the mining site is at further risk of collapse, putting the lives of those who rely on it in jeopardy,” a local resident said.
The ongoing mining activities have left many residents in distress, with some describing constant anxiety over the disruption to their lives. One villager expressed, “every day, the disruption to our lives leaves us feeling helpless.” He added that the mining has also caused extensive environmental damage, raising concerns about the health of water bodies and the surrounding ecosystem.
Residents claim they have repeatedly approached authorities but received no response. “We have reached out to officials, including the Deputy Commissioner of Kupwara, the District Mining Officer, the Superintendent of Police, and the Tehsildar of Handwara, urging them to intervene,” said a resident. Despite their appeals, they allege no action has been taken, leaving them frustrated and helpless.
The residents demanded immediate measures to stop illegal mining, safeguard their environment, and protect their livelihoods. “Our leaders have failed us. We have no one to turn to,” said another resident, urging the authorities to act before the situation worsens.
