Haryana Panchayat Polls: SC upholds minimum educational criteria for contesting election

NEW DELHI :  The Supreme Court today, in its landmark judgement, upheld the validity of the Haryana government’s law which had specified the minimum educational qualification for candidates to contest panchayat elections in the state.
Giving a go ahead to the Haryana government’s law, a division bench of the Apex Court, comprising Justices J Chelameshwar and Abhay Mohan Sapre, passed the order after hearing several petitions filed, including one by Rajbala. Dismissing all the petitions in the case, the top court gave a green signal to the state government’s law and upheld it.
The law of the Haryana government fixes matriculation as minimum essential qualification for general candidates contesting the panchayat elections, while the minimum educational qualification for women (general) and Scheduled Caste candidates has been fixed at Class VIII.
But, in case of a woman candidate belonging to the SC category contesting the local election in the state, the minimum educational qualification would be Class V pass, the law says. The amended law was passed by the state government on the concluding day of the Monsoon Session of Haryana Assembly in September. (UNI)
