SRINAGAR, July 6: Residents of Hayan in the Kangan area of Ganderbal district today demanded the construction of a safe, motorable bridge over the Sind River to connect their area with the Srinagar-Leh highway.
The residents expressed concerns about the current bridge, which has been in disrepair for over three years, posing significant dangers and hardships for villagers who rely on it for daily commutes. The bridge’s narrow width makes it difficult for vehicles to pass through, leading to fatal accidents. Additionally, its broken side railing has created a precarious situation for residents.
“Every day, we risk our lives crossing this bridge. It is a challenge for everyone, especially the elderly and children, to navigate such a risky and unstable structure,” one local said.
Residents highlighted that they have faced similar issues since 1996. “Initially, we had a wooden bridge, but the current steel bridge, though an upgrade, remains too narrow for vehicles to pass safely,” another local explained. The lack of a reliable bridge has also adversely affected the local economy, as many depend on the highway for livelihoods and transporting goods to markets. “Our business suffers because we cannot efficiently transport our produce to markets. The bridge is our lifeline, and its current condition is unacceptable,” another resident said.
The residents demand for a new bridge underscores the urgency of the situation. “The government must prioritize our safety and well-being. A new bridge is not just necessary; it is a matter of life and death,” they said.
