JAMMU, Dec 28: A four-day scholarship programme was started here today by Harbans Bhalla Educational Trust (HBET) for students from rural areas wherein over 80 per cent girl students from economically weaker families shall be covered.
A handout of the Trust stated that tests will also be conducted from classes 1st to 3rd for selection of new students for the next academic year.
Apart from scholarships, the children will also get free medical and eye checkups.
The students from class 7-10 will also participate in the evaluation tests.
Managing Trustee of the Trust said that scholarships will be distributed to 600 students and in next several days about 100 students will be daily invited along with their parents to participate in the programme.
The Trust has been awarding scholarships since 1997 and the number of beneficiary children helped every year has grown from 12 to 600.
The handout stated that HBET aims to cover as many rural children as possible in and around Jammu in areas like Chak, Rattian, Doomi, Gajansoo, R.S Pura, Birpur etc.
Families of financially weak girl children from classes 1-3 may apply to the Trust for scholarship and the Trust only accepts financially weak students of Government schools.
