HC bans entry of taxis in Srinagar city

SRINAGAR, Nov 30: The High Court today banned the entry of Sumos and taxis operating from different districts into Srinagar city and  make all efforts for smooth flow of traffic in and around the city.
The direction was passed by the Division Bench of Justice Ali Mohammad Magrey and Justice Sanjay Kumar Gupta while hearing PIL praying therein for smooth and regular traffic on roads.
Court took serious note of plying of Sumos and taxis running from main road Old Bus Stand at Batmaloo and said it is total illegal and the authorities are watching it as mute spectators when the new bus stand at Parimpora has been made operational.
Court directed the authorities to ensure that no Sumo and taxis operate from road side and no such vehicle should be allowed to enter the city, which are plying to different districts.
Court, at the very threshold of hearing of the PIL, sought appearance of all concerned including SSP Traffic City, Commissioner SMC, Transport Commissioner, SDA authorities and others with the observations that the Court is dealing with PIL and these officials should have been available before the Court.
Court has been informed that the Old Bus Stand is vacant but Sumos and taxis are running from the main entrance and exit gates of the Old Bus Stand and are creating problem by blocking and chocking  the main road which has badly hampered the free flow of traffic.
Court also directed that vehicles not be allowed to park except on designated parking slots declared by the authorities and the vehicles be given proper coding plying for different routes.
Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, in this connection, has been directed to convene a meeting with all stakeholders to ensure smooth plying of traffic within the city. The SSP Traffic City especially has been directed to participate in the meeting.
In case of encroached structures are identified by SSP Traffic, Divisional Commissioner Kashmir has been directed to ensure that the structure is removed with the help of enforcement agency. Court also directed for continuous process of removal of encroachments.
The status report submitted by JKERA with regard to work on Rambagh flyover, Court has been informed that it be completed by the end of June 2018 and certain stretch of the road from Rambagh to Naaz Crossing have already been macadamized and remaining part of the  stretch of road be macadamized in near future.
