SRINAGAR, Apr 5: Division Bench of State High Court comprising Justice Yaqoob Mir and Justice J R Kotwal today directed Chief Secretary of the State to constitute a team that will look into the suggestions of the Municipal Veterinary Officer (MVO), Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) for ensuring the supply of quality meat to the consumers.
The direction was passed in a Public Interest Litigation titled Advocate Sheikh Mohammad Ayoub versus State of Jammu and Kashmir.
The DB directed Chief Secretary to constitute a team and examine the suggestions made by Municipal Veterinary officer, who was present in the court, and file response within three weeks.
The Municipal Veterinary Officer suggested that the issue can be tackled at three levels including live stock entry post at Athwajan needs to be equipped with adequate manpower and immediate deployment of two livestock assistants from animal husbandry and two samplers from SMC.
“Livestock health certificate be issued to the truck carrying live stock found fit for human consumption and dead carcases unloaded and disposed off immediately,” the MVO suggested.
In the PIL it has been suggested that weekly awareness programmes for butchers including hygiene, management and meat handling by experts from faculty of Veterinary Sciences Shuhama-SKUAST and from department of animal husbandry Kashmir.
