HC gives Govt last opportunity on Sagar’s plea

SRINAGAR, May 20: High Court today granted 10 days time as last opportunity to Government for filing of response to the plea of senior National Conference leader Ali Mohammad Sagar for changing his lodgement in view of outbreak of COVID-19 or setting him free on parole.
Justice Sindhu Sharma granted last and final opportunity of 10 days time to Government to file response to the contentions of Sagar.
Court as interim measure had directed the authorities to consider the plea of bail of the petitioner on the basis of contents made in the bail application and more particularly having regard to health grounds and submit the report before the court.
Till date no report has been filed by the authorities. Sagar had moved an application seeking to put him under house arrest and quarantine him at home so that there is least chance of his exposure to viral infections.
Authorities recently extended the detention of Sagar under PSA along with other political leaders for further 3 months.
He was arrested in August last year and was first under preventive detention and later was booked under PSA. Apart from shifting plea his detention is also under challenge before the court.
He also seeks direction on the authorities for payment of Rs 10 crores as compensation for detaining him illegally.
